Zakir and his Tabla: Dha Dhin Na

My book review is about Zakir and his Tabla: Dha Dhin Na by Sandhya Rao. The illustrations are by Priya Kuriyan.

Everyone who loves music knows about Ustad Zakir Hussain. This book tells the story of how Zakir Hussain became a famous tabla Maestro. Zakir Hussain’s father, Ustad Allarakha was a very well-known tabla artist and teacher. So, it was natural that Zakir developed the knowledge and interest to learn music from him. Their home rang with the beats of the tabla as Ustad Allarakha taught his students.

Little Zakir imitated his father by beating on pots and pans. Some children can become nervous to play in front of crowds. Zakir was the opposite. He played at school functions and also near his house.

One thing that filled me with awe was Zakir’s dedication. He had to get up early (3.00 am) to learn from his father, then go to the madrasa to learn the Quran, and then to school for his classes. You must put in a lot of practice to become good at any instrument. And Zakir did just that!

I chose to read Zakir and his Tabla: Dha Dhin Na because I am learning to play the mridangam. When I read the book, two things struck my mind – one is Zakir’s dedication and the other is his confidence. Did you know that Zakir was only seven years old when he played for Ustad Ali Akbar Khan? I play the mridangam for my family and friends, but I don’t know if I will ever play on stage. I always liked Zakir Hussain but now I am impressed by  his bravery.

The illustrations in the book are very beautiful too. If you love music, you should read Zakir and his Tabla: Dha Dhin Na. It is a good way to learn about Zakir Hussain.
