When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit

This story takes place in Berlin, Germany during World War II. When Hitler Stole the Pink Rabbit is a true story that happened to the author Judith Kerr. The author  her parents and her brother had to escape Germany, when the  author was a 9-year-old, as the author’s father opposed Hitler’s rule  and as they were Jews.

Moreover, their father was a writer and frequently spoke in the  radio, mocking Hitler and the Nazis. All these were more than enough reasons to move out of the country.

Anna, as the author referred to herself, was excited to move out!  She found it quite shocking herself because usually people are not  usually pleased about moving to an unknown country in fear that  their passports maybe confiscated. But she did not feel as if she  was in a familiar zone once she moved to Switzerland.

They stayed in Zurich, Switzerland for a couple of months and then,  due to financial reasons, they had to move to Paris, France. There  Anna and her brother had a really hard time learning French. But  then just as she was about to give up, she managed to learn French  after all, with a little motivation from her mother. You could imagine  her surprise! It was in Paris that her father wrote a film script about Napoleone Bonaparte, which was brought by a British filmmaker. Since her father was given enough money, they moved to  England. That is where the story ends.

I love When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit because it offers an insight to life during World War II and how the people of Germany relocated to different countries. It must have been so hard for them in real life. But I am  glad Judith Kerr wrote this book for kids, because its fun and  enjoyable and not distressing at all, considering how the situation  was.

About the author:

Anna Judith Kerr OBE (14 June 1923 – 22 May 2019) was a German born British writer and illustrator. She is known for her picture  book, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, and novels for older children such  as the semi-autobiographical When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, which gave a child’s insight of escaping Hitler’s rule during World War II.

I would recommend the book for any child above age 6, wanting to  learn the way of life during World War II.
