The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of twelve short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes is the most famous detective in the world. He is strange but brilliant, and a man of many talents.
We, the readers, are astonished by Sherlock Holmes’ deductions, just like his friend, Dr. Watson. But when the detective explains his observations, it looks so simple and obvious.
My favourite story in the book was The Adventures of the Speckled Band. A young woman visited Sherlock Holmes. She was scared and worried about something. She told Holmes that her sister was going to get married, but she died in a mysterious way. No one could explain how. But two things happened. One night, the sister heard a long whistle. Then, before she died, she told the young woman that ‘it was the speckled band.’ No one knew what she meant.
This young woman came to Sherlock Holmes because she was going to get married now. She had to sleep in her sister’s room because of some repair work in the house. But that night, she heard the mysterious whistling sound. Terrified, she came to Holmes for help.
Will Holmes discover what made the eerie whistling noise? Or will the young woman also die? What is the stepfather, Mr. Roylott, up to?
I like this story because the reader can feel the young woman’s terror. The stepfather is creepy, and I felt relieved when Holmes solved the case.
