In this episode, three children share their thoughts on Independence Day. What does Independence Day mean to you, my friends? The marchpasts, flag hoisting, and national anthem are symbols to recognize the great struggle of our freedom fighters. The fact that they gave up their lives for the freedom to govern ourselves places a greater responsibility on us, doesn’t it? How will you strive to meet your obligations? The bright future that awaits you will not be possible without the sacrifices of a diverse group of people in the past. Keep that flame of unity burning as you work to better your lives and those of your fellow citizens. Today we will hear from Tanrika, Sana, and Megha.
Megha recollects her favourite memories of independence day celebrations from when she was little. Sana’s poem will resonate with all our listeners as she describes the joy the day brings her. Tanrika’s poem will remind you of all the work yet to be done for every citizen to enjoy the rights that freedom bestows on us.
Independence Day
My memory of Independence Day was when I was really young. We’d all dress up in ethnic wear and go to school. We’d all love it. Because we got really good sweets that we all loved. But that was the least exciting part. We’d go to school and watch the flag all ready to be hoisted, flower petals lay on the floor and that got us all excited. We’d rush home, change and come back. After that adults would tell us stories about how Independence Day was celebrated when they were young and the history of Independence Day. After that we’d eat dinner and the stars would be all out. We’d watch the plays prepared for us.
This is my memory of Independence Day because it was a real rush, and we’d all get really excited, every year.

Independence
The day of glory
When we got freedom on august 15th
We thank our freedom fighters
And celebrate happily.
The day we love and await,
Happiness fills us and
Makes us proud.
We as Indians on that day
Say JAI HIND.
We on that day unite as one
To celebrate our glorious independence day.
The day when all religions come together
As one unity in diversity to enjoy their independence.
The land of peace and prosperity
Where all types of religions and
people of different cultures live
In peace. We Indians are proud
Of our country. We always pay a
Gratitude to all our freedom
fighters who played a vital role
For this day, Independence Day!

Independence Day
By Tanrika Narayan
A bird in a cage,
Wings clipped close;
A snake in the charmer’s basket,
Only comes out for your entertainment;
A tiger pacing angrily,
Behind the bars of a cage in the zoo;
A lion jumping through fire hoops,
At the sound of the whip;
A cow chewing paper,
Stuck on the small city wall;
Rabbits in a drug stupor
In cold laboratories;
Star tortoises crammed in a suitcase,
Ready for illegal shipping;
Sharks in the ocean harpooned,
For their fin in a soup…
Free them, give them freedom
Free them, give them freedom
Cos’ it’s what they deserve
A child in tattered clothes
Standing by the road;
A man toiling all day
To just feed his children;
A woman struggles with her family
To take up a job;
A young man walking with crutches
Stopped by the stairs;
Poor children skip school
No buses to take them there;
Girls can’t go anymore
Past puberty, they say;
Marriages are arranged
Between mere children;
Two cups in shops
A dalit’s got to stay away….
Free them too, give them their freedom
Free them too, give them their freedom
Real freedom to be free
That’s just what every body needs!
That’s just what every body needs!
Thank you!
