Author: Eowyn Colfer Review By: Sanjay Sharma Grade: 6 |
My book review is about the book Artemis Fowl. It is the first book in a fantasy series.
When I read this book, at first I was shocked. Heroes are always good kids. They can be powerful or weak, but they always find themselves caught in some struggle because of others. They become strong and fight for the good. But Artemis fowl has millions, is brilliant, and devious. He pulls people into his traps and makes them fight back.
Artemis is only 12 years old and he is already the head of a large criminal family. He is convinced that fairies are real. So what does he do? A lot of research leads him and his bodyguard, Butler, to find The Book of the People, which has everything about fairies. Artemis uses some computer software to translate the book and reads it.
The action starts when Artemis meets Holly! Holly is an elf and a captain of Lower Elements Police (LEP). She may be small but she is a firecracker. Artemis and Butler catch her when she is recharging her magic and they keep her hostage. When her commander Julius Root comes to rescue her, you find the real reason that Artemis was so interested in fairies. He wants one ton of 24-carat gold in exchange for Holly!
The LEP uses the dwarf Mulch Diggums to burrow into the ground and break into Artemis’s house. Holly manages to escape, but there is a lot of confusion because the commander is changed. The acting commander sends a troll to attack Artemis so the other fairies can enter the house. But Butler and Holly defeat the troll.
At the end of the book, you find that Artemis is not all evil genius. He is a young boy whose father has disappeared and whose mother is insane with grief. Holly agrees to cure his mother to get half the gold back.
The book is full of action, packed with a lot of fighting. This is the first time I’ve read a mix of magic and science fiction. There are leprechauns and dwarfs, and trolls, and a centaur that makes some pretty cool inventions.
My verdict: Don’t worry if you think you like Artemis. He may be bad but he is likable. My favorite character is Mulch Diggums. Imagine all those fart bombs of his!
