A Study In Scarlet
“The name’s Sherlock Holmes, and the address is 221B Baker Street.”
Well this is how Arthur Conan Doyle got us introduced to Sherlock Holmes, the world’s only consulting detective in the first book of the series – A Study In Scarlet.
The book begins with the very seemingly intriguing introduction that takes place between Dr. Watson and Sherlock as they further go on to become roommates. While the adventures take place we are also introduced to characters like D.I. Lestrade, Mrs. Hudson, Mycroft and Molly Hooper along with many others. For me, A Study In Scarlet was completely fascinating as I flipped pages restlessly to know what they would further explore. It was also fun predicting what the answer to the puzzle would be, before the other two did. I would always be nearly accurate but never as observant as Sherlock himself.
As I read through, I discovered a great deal of stuff about the protagonist. At the very beginning we sense that his intellect is greatly valued even in the crime branch of policemen. And even though he is asked by them to help out with their cases, the money and prestige he can gain on a regular basis don’t concern him.
The unique technique of Sherlock Holmes that is the ‘Art of Deduction’ fancied me throughout, more than anything did. I was flabbergasted at the thought that deduction could lead to such praiseworthy intelligence. And the moment I finished the book I had already made up my mind to master the ‘Art of Deduction’ if it would actually give me brains like Sherlock’s.
To wrap it all, I believe A Study In Scarlet is a great read as I enjoyed finding the protagonist and his accomplice solving the even the toughest of cases from the criminal world of London. I would strongly recommend this book, or shall I say the entire series, to everyone who enjoys mysteries and thrills!
