Mr. Popper’s Penguins
Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a charming story written by Richard and Florence Atwater. It is illustrated by Jim Madsen. This book has been awarded a Newbery Honor. It is about Mr. Popper, a house painter, living with his family. He dreams of being an Antarctic explorer, living among penguins and his hero, Admiral Drake. One day, Admiral Drake sends a real, live penguin to Mr. Popper’s house. Soon, the house is crowded with penguins. But, how will they make enough money to run the family and the penguins?
I like the book because the authors have chosen a unique topic. It is rare for people to write about the Antarctic and a person who loves penguins and has them as pets. It is a funny and cute story about the strong bond between Mr. Popper and his penguins. Many times, the family almost gives up. But they do not lose hope. They learn to overcome the difficulties that they face. The illustrations in this book are very descriptive and make us feel that we are witnessing the scenes ourselves. The authors have included lots of facts in this story.
This book will appeal to kids because of the topic and the way it has been written. My favourite characters in this book are the penguins Captain Cook and Greta. They are adorable. This book helps readers to dream and believe that anything is possible. I wish that the authors will write another volume of this book. Mr. Popper’s Penguins has also been made into a movie. I would recommend this book for ages 8-12 and would give this book 4.5 stars out of 5.
