Building Emergent Literacy Skills – Webinar for Parents and Preschool Teachers

What are Emergent Literacy Skills?

To thrive in school, children need strong reading skills. Much of their learning depends on gathering information from content-area classes like science, social studies, and math—and that requires well-developed listening and reading comprehension skills.

Successful readers can quickly recognize words, understand academic vocabulary, connect new ideas to prior knowledge, and use comprehension strategies to make sense of what they read.

These abilities don’t appear overnight. They begin to grow when parents and caregivers engage children in rich, meaningful language experiences such as talking, reading, and exploring print together. These foundational experiences, known as emergent literacy skills, lay the groundwork for future reading and writing success.

What you will learn:

•The skills under emergent literacy

•The influence of home in children’s literacy skills.

•How emergent literacy leads to conventional literacy development.

•Six key areas of emergent literacy.

•Developmentally appropriate practices that facilitate emergent literacy at home
