Coraline

I read the book Coraline by Neil Gaiman. I became interested in this book because I saw the film first and it was scary. I found the book to be super, super creepy. I’m warning you now that it will give you nightmares.

Coraline is the main character. When her family moves, she is bored in the new house. Her parents are busy and she has to find something to do. Coraline explores the house and finds a secret door. She becomes curious and wants to know where it goes. The neighbours warn her there is danger but that only makes it more interesting.

Coraline opens the door and sees a passage on the other side. She steps into a flat to explore. Imagine her surprise when the flat looks exactly like her own house. Two people who look like her mother and father are also there, but they are different in an odd way. They have buttons instead of eyes! They also act differently; they are so sweet and give her interesting toys. Coraline thinks if only her life was like that with her real parents.

But something is not right with this other mother and father. The other mother wants her to have button eyes instead of the real eyes. Coraline knows she should not agree to it. She is also disturbed by those trapped souls. Who are they? But when she comes back to her house, her real mother and father are not there. Where did they go? How will she save them? Read the story to find out about it.

When I read horror books or any scary story, I want the main character to find a way to escape somehow. So, when Coraline is given the chance to save her real parents and make things right, I knew it was going to be okay. But still, that other mother was so spooky that I had to move from my room to be where my parents were sitting. I just wanted to be near them when I was reading this book.

This is a great book to read on a rainy night with pakodas and green chutney. Make sure you are sitting next to your mum and dad!
