ABC Order: Festivals of India 1

FESTIVALS OF INDIA abc order 1 Festivals of India-C

Have you ever noticed how children learn the alphabet in order? The ABC songs are excellent tools to reinforce the memory of the order. But that’s not the only place where alphabetical order is emphasized. In a practical sense, we often see information arranged in the ABC order.

Common uses of the alphabetical or ABC order:

  • Dictionary
  • Bookstore
  • Library
  • Table of content, glossary in books
  • Computer files
  • Phone contact list

We’ve created FREE worksheets for you to use in your classrooms or at home to reinforce the most common vocabulary associated with the different Indian festivals.

India is a land of many faiths, because of which we have numerous festive celebrations throughout the year. Our various subcultures and languages add even more diversity with songs, foods, and rituals that bring families and communities together. The harvest festival can be a four-day celebration, as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, or a two-day celebration, as Magh Bihu in Assam.

In this section, you will find worksheets where your child will practice alphabetizing the vocabulary words for each celebration. You may be familiar with many of the festivals in this section. We’ve also included other festivals, especially from the Seven Sisters of the Northeast, that children (and adults) in the rest of India may not be familiar with unless it is in their textbooks. This is an excellent opportunity for your children to learn new vocabulary and recognize the diversity of their country.

The vocabulary words in the word bank are taken from the various festivals of India. Many of the vocabulary words come from the regional languages of India, and children may be orally familiar with the terms, but they may not know to spell these. This exercise is not a spelling activity. Children may learn the spelling in the process, but the key skill reinforced here is sequencing the words in alphabetical order.
